QVC’s New Beauty Testube – Product Review

My mom often has difficulty purchasing me gifts for my birthday and Christmas. She may also be QVC’s biggest fan. It’s a good thing
that QVC came out with the New Beauty Testube.

What is it? It’s a way to sample a bunch of amazing beauty products all year long. It’s like my birthday every couple of months when I get
my quarterly package from New Beauty filled with great products.

I was thrilled and pleasantly surprised with my first package which consisted of Smashbox Lip Enhancer, Oscar Blandi Sans H20 Shampoo, Fresh Just-Bitten Pout lip treatment,  Lea Journo hydra-riche hydrating conditioner, Perricone MD face finishing moisturizer, Philosophy Microdelivery Wash, LAVANILLA body butter and the IT Consmetics Brow Power eyebrow pencil.

My personal faves from this testube were the Lea Journo conditioner and the Philosophy face wash. The Lea Journo conditioner made my hair silky smooth and smelled absolutely incredible. The Philosophy face wash made my skin feel exfoliated and fresh. I’ve always wanted to try Philosophy products for my face but never had. The microdelivery exfoliating wash is addicting. This is your warning. I loved it!

Thank you QVC for coming up with a great way to test a variety of products. It’s the perfect gift!

Disclaimer *I received this product as a gift from my mother. I was not required to write a blog post. My thoughts are my own.

Always Put “Your Best Face” Forward

I was thrilled when my fellow tweep YBF (Your Best Face) reached out to me via Twitter to do a product review for them. I’ve been chatting with them for a while now and was very curious about their products. Plus one of the founding partners Darrell lives in Minnesota. I’m a bit partial to Minnesota as my grandma lives there, cheese curds are there and the cutest store Patina in the Highlands. So as far as I’m concerned some of the best things are in Minnesota. I was anxious to try out their line.

YBF was founded in 2004 by friends Darrell Owens & Kimberley Fristed.  You may find YBF at The Skin Care Shop and The Makeup Bar or you may order online through their websites. They were voted Best Indie Skin Care Line in About.com 2011 Readers’ Choice Awards and celebrate their 4 year anniversary with The Skin Care Shop in May 2011. Products are priced between $15-$160(USD) and are only available through YBF’s retailers.

All the YBF products smell amazing and to me, that’s just as important as how they work. Here are the products I tried out.

Define is an anti-aging lip cream that brightens and contours while improving fullness. The peptides help fill any lines around the lips to increase the fullness.

Quench is a lip balm (who doesn’t love lip balm) that is uber minty fresh and super moisturizing.  It seals in moisture and prevents future damage from stress and environmental factors.

Almost all the YBF skincare smells like almonds (except the lip care items). It’s absolutely delicious!

Defend is a serum that provides wrinkle prevention, balances oil & shine and hydrates & tones. This serum is a great product if you are in the sun a lot. It helps with sun damage, shine and onset of wrinkles. It can be used over the entire face or you may spot treat shine-prone areas.

Boost is a daily moisturizer that clarifies skin, tightens & tones and discourages blemishes. It smells incredible and makes your skin silky smooth. This product works great layered with other YBF serums. I loved how this product seeped into my skin so quickly, yet without making me feel like I was sticky.

I paired the Defend with the Boost and my skin felt amazing. The boost is really moisturizing and sinks into the skin quickly.

Restore is filled with Vitamin C, brighteners and top antioxidants to even pigmentation, diminish dark spots and reduce inflammation for a refreshed look. It brightens skin, soothers & refreshes and promotes healing.

Control is another great serum that helps to reduce deep wrinkles, sun damage repair and rejuvenates complexion.

Once I ran out of the Defend, I began pairing the Boost with Control. That’s my second favorite combination, but remember, it all depends on your skin type and also what you are trying to achieve.

Hydrate B Concentrate helps to draw moisture deeper into the skin. It is a clear gel that includes three forms of B vitamins which work to rejuvenate the skin, speed healing and improve tone and texture. It can also be used as a gentler alternative to toners.

Antioxidants Concentrate is a lightweight serum with loads of anti-aging skincare ingredients such as Ferulic Acid, Spin Trap, Lipochroman-6 and Vitamin E. You may use this serum on its own or in conjunction with your favorite moisturizer. The Antioxidants Concentrate also makes a great addition prior to or after spa services such as LED light treatments.

Correct is an invigorating eye cream that targets lines and puffiness and reduces dark circles. I’ve tried a number of eye creams in the past and this one is the most moisturizing of them all. YBF says it’s their “end-all-be-all” cream and I couldn’t agree more.

The YBF products are filled with great antioxidants, peptides, vitamins and botanicals to make you look and feel your best.  Check’em out.

Salon Hair Every Day

Anthony Robert Salon

Before

Everyone knows that your hair looks its best when you step out of a salon. The problem is, trying to replicate that look every day when getting ready. When I heard that Anthony Lombardi of the Style Network’s hit show Jerseylicious was doing blowout sessions at his salon the Anthony Robert Salon in Verona, NJ, I had to inquire.

Anthony came up with a great idea! Clients can come in and schedule a blowout session with him and he will teach them how to replicate the look using the tools and products they already own. I thought this was fantastic! I could learn how to get great hair by doing it myself with the tools I already have. What girl doesn’t want to wake up, get ready and look like they just stepped out of a salon? I sound like a commercial.

Since I was long overdue for a haircut, I figured I would kill two birds with one stone and make a haircut appointment and blowout lesson with Anthony. I couldn’t wait to see him again! When I met him at the Jerseylicious premiere, he was so nice and such a down to earth guy.

The hubs and I arrived to the Anthony Robert Salon and was greeted with such enthusiasm and a hug from both Anthony and Jeff, who is a stylist there.  Anthony invited me to have a seat and we discussed what I wanted to do with my hair. I told him that I am growing it long again and was looking for a little trim. I needed a sprucing up and maybe some layers, but not too Jennifer Aniston first season Friends!  Anthony laid out the styling tools I brought with me. I felt the need to explain why I had each item. But he guessed them right on! The wide tooth comb is for detangling after a shower, the boar bristle round brush is for styling while blow-drying and the other brush is just to detangle throughout the day. Ok, he knows what he’s talking about!

I headed off to the shampoo area where Jeff did my shampoo. Then back to the chair where Anthony would snip and cut away. Once he was finished cutting, Anthony said you shouldn’t blow-dry immediately after a shower. Once you take a shower, towel dry your hair, keep a towel on it, do a few things and then blow-dry. You should be able to wring your hair and it not be dripping. It should be damp. Anthony then sprayed a Bio-Ionic leave-in conditioner in my hair, followed by the Bio-Ionic Thermal-Active Bodifying Blow-Dry Spray and finished with a dime size amount of Moroccan Oil. The blow-dry spray will add texture to hair but not leave it sticky or hard to manage. I told him that in the past I’ve bought tons of products to use before blow-drying, but that I can never get a brush through because the product leaves my hair sticky and tough. He assured me this product would not do that. The Moroccan Oil is meant to give your hair a little shine and help to create the look you are going for.

Anthony then grabbed a few hair clips and sectioned my hair off. He said to always blow-dry your hair in ¼” sections. This will help from getting your hair tangled in the brush. He said the back of your hair is typically the hardest for most people to do because of the angle, so people should do the back first and then work forward. Anthony grabbed a section of hair on the back of my head, his blow-dryer and couldn’t stress enough how important it is to keep the nozzle on your blow-dryer. You know what I’m talking about ladies. You buy a new blow-dryer. It comes with a diffuser and this other nozzle looking thing. The nozzle thing goes in the trash. Right? That’s what I’ve always done. But we can no longer do that. That nozzle is what helps to isolate the hair you are trying to blow-dry so your hair doesn’t blow everywhere. It keeps it all together.

When working on each section of hair it is important to, again keep the nozzle on your blow-dryer, and work from your roots down with your brush and blow-dryer. If you are looking for more volume hold a section straight up, bring your round brush to the root and blow dry out. Make sure your blow-dryer isn’t right up against your hair, give it some space.

Anthony worked on the left side of my hair and once he showed me the proper technique, I mimicked his work on the right side of my head. I’m not as coordinated as Anthony with holding a dryer in one hand and a brush in another and working quickly. I kept having to put the dryer down to get my brush just right and meanwhile shooting all the hot air from the dryer right on to Anthony. Sorry Ant! By the end of my lesson, I was a pro. Ok, maybe not a pro, but I was able to blow-dry my hair without constantly putting my dryer down. Anthony and Jeff were very supportive and gave me positive feedback throughout my lesson.

Once my hair was dried and blown out, Anthony applied SemÍ DÍ LÍno Diamante™ Cristalli Liquidi, an illuminating serum to add some shine to my new do. I immediately recognized the smell of the product. I said this smells so good. Everyone agreed. It reminded me of boy’s in the 80’s wearing Drakkar Noir. Remember those days? Not only did my hair look amazing, but it smelled amazing too.

After

I was thrilled with my new do and my blowout lesson. I really learned a ton! I gave Anthony and Jeff a hug and was on my way, but before I left, Anthony gave me a great summertime tip. If you aren’t able to rinse off after a swim in the pool, mix a bit of conditioner with water into a spray water bottle and spritz your hair after swimming. This will help rid your hair of some chlorine from the pool and help to keep your hair healthy and shiny and not dull and fried.

Ladies… I highly recommend that you schedule an appointment with Anthony Lombardi of the Anthony Robert Salon for a blowout session. You already have the tools, now you need to learn the technique. Don’t you want to be able to style your hair like you just stepped out of a salon every morning?

To schedule your appointment call the Anthony Robert Salon at (973) 857-1922.

BLC – BeautyLand Couture "It's all about the fun"

BLC – BeautyLand Couture “It’s all about the fun”

BLC

Tucked away in Princeton Forrestal Village is BeautyLand Couture or BLC as the locals refer to it. It is a trendy, cool, boutique beauty store that sells great products and has wonderful customer service. “It’s all about the fun”, as their motto clearly states.

I’ve shopped in BLC numerous times, their hot pink, black & white, fun flirty atmosphere gets me in there every time. However, recently I heard they do parties, so I had to check it out. I walked in and was greeted by the owner Nina, who is “personality plus”. I mentioned I was looking for a new facemask, I explained my skin type and what I was going for. She was completely honest with me and said she thought I’d love the Grape Seed Extract peel-off masque by Queen Helene.  It was only $4.  Four dollars for glowing skin?  I had to try it.  I love that I wasn’t “oversold” at BLC. They are honest and sell you the products they love and what they think works best for your needs.

I had heard about their “Princess Parties” though the grapevine and had to inquire. The Princess Parties are for ages 4-8 and includes 1 ½ hour use of the BLC party room, a party hostess, nail application or makeover, princess jewels, a goodie bag for each “princess” and a special gift for the birthday girl. Cost?  Under $17 per child (and the avoidance of cleaning your house before OR after). Not only that, but they supply all the necessary party products like cups, plates, tablecloths, etc.  with their signature pink style that little girls adore. Partygoers can watch their favorite movie on DVD or play their own music on their iPod through the BLC sound system. How cool is that? I’m guessing Hannah Montana or the Jonas trio rock the house for these events.  The staff is very helpful and always at your service and are more than willing to help orchestrate your catering needs. They will order your pizza or sushi if that’s your flavor.  Did I mention that the party princess gets a tiara? I think I know where I’m having my party next year – you are never too old for the allure of a tiara!

BLC is also a hit for the slightly old crowd. Their ”Girls Night Out Package” works for a Baby Shower, Bridal Shower or just an excuse to get together with the girls for a bit of beauty. For under $23 per guest it even includes a cheese platter and wine.

BLC sells makeup and hair products for every ethnicity. They even sell some beauty products for pets. Go figure! Their products range from high-end brands to inexpensive brands that work. Like I said, they only work with products they love and will be completely honest with you as to what they think would work best for you.

BLC is currently developing “Madison K” which will be an interactive cartoon answering questions and giving advice to children and teens, reminding them that everyone is beautiful and unique in their own way.  Ahhh technology!

Did we pique your interest?  If you head over to BLC, mention “Princeton Scoop” and receive you’ll get a free gift. While you’re there, pick up the Grape Seed Extract facemask. Not only does it smell fantastic, but it left my skin feeling clean and silky smooth. It’s my new “go to” product without a doubt.
